1st Year B’nei Mitzvah: Intro to Blessings

To learn about the Shema & Jewish blessings, we are...

  • Listening to the Shema and meditating on it.

  • Playing drama games to learn the basic words of Jewish blessings.

  • Creating brochot (blessing) comic strips, and discussing a variety of blessings for different occasions. 

  • Discussing the meaning and purpose of the brochot (blessings), and playing blessing-themed group games.

  • What is the Shema prayer about?

  • What does unity have to do with the Shema?

  • How do Jewish blessings usually start?

  • Did you learn any blessings that surprised you?


5th Grade: In Pursuit of Peace

To learn about pursuing justice and peace, we are...

  • Discussing how many injustices arise from perceived differences between people.

  • Defining the Hebrew word “Tzedek,” justice, what justice is, and why the pursuit of justice is so important in Judaism.

  • Reading a poem and watching a video about pursuing peace, and then writing our own poems about peace.

4th Grade: The Value of Avoiding Gossip

To learn about avoiding gossip, we are…

  • Answering the question - Why do we gossip?

  • Playing an “agree/disagree” game to express our opinions on gossip and to discuss what to do if we hear gossip. 

  • Playing games to learn about the Jewish value of not gossiping.

  • What are ways to stop a friend from hurting someone through speech, by spreading rumors, or gossiping? 

  • What do you think you should do if a person is hurting you by Lashon Hara?


3rd Grade: Telling the Truth

To learn about the core Jewish values of Emet (truthfulness) we are:

  • Playing group games that involve lying, and discussing how it feels to lie and be lied to. 

  • Imagining situations where we are lied to, and thinking through how we would feel and what our reactions would be. 

  • Challenging ourselves to avoid even telling white lies, by roleplaying situations where we may want to lie, but instead decide to tell the truth.

  • Drawing comic strips to represent how even the tiniest of lies can be blown way out of proportion, and how it can be hard to break the habit of lying once you start.

  • What does Judaism teach us about telling the truth?

  • What could happen if you tell even a small lie?


2nd Grade: What was Noah’s Ark?

To learn about Noah’s Ark, we are...

  • Hearing and watching the story of Noah’s Ark, then putting the story in order ourselves.

  • Discussing what it means to make a promise, and discussing G-d’s promise to Noah.

  • Thinking up animals that “missed the ark”.

  • Have you ever made a promise to someone that was hard to keep? 

  • Why do you think G-d started a flood?


Kindergarten & 1st Grade: Discovering Noah’s Ark
