1st Year B’nei Mitzvah Class

To learn about the holiday of Tu B’Shevat & Bal Tashchit (Do Not Destroy), we are...

  • Playing recycling-based games to remember the mantra “reduce, reuse, recycle.”

  • Having a mini “fruit tasting” fruit seder, and hearing about other Tu B’Shevat customs.

  • Doing some tree-inspired yoga and leaving with a packet of seeds to plant.

  • Filming Bal Tashchit PSA videos in which we spread awareness of real environmental issues, and offered our own ideas of how to help solve them. 

  • Creating Bal Tashchit Pledges of one action we will focus on to do our part for the environment, and envisioning how we want this action to keep developing in the future.

5th Grade: Remembering the 6 Million

To learn about the 6 million Jewish people who perished during the Holocaust, we…

  • Discussing what Hitler’s “Final Solution” entailed, reviewing what we have learned about the 1930s that led to this terrible time, and watching a video about Anne Frank.

  • Creating memorial artwork based on poems of children interned at concentration camps.

  • Exploring the identities of real people who went through the Holocaust and doing a drama activity involving these identities. 

  • Watching the trailer for the Paper Clips documentary, which helps us understand how many 6 million is.

  • Listening to the Israeli National anthem to remember that there was still hope for the Jewish people after the Holocaust, and to represent how many Holocaust survivors found refuge in Israel.

4th Grade: Experiencing Tu B’shevat

To learn about Tu B’shevat, we are...

  • Playing a game to match up different trees to their fruits, to see the variety of trees in the world. 

  • Designing our own new trees based on what we would want to see more of in the world.

  • Playing a “Trivia Show” game to learn about which items can be recycled, and which items can be re-used.

  • Preparing ourselves to celebrate the new year of the trees, by doing a guided “Tree Pose” yoga practice.

2nd Grade: Repairing the World

Today to learn about Tu B’Shevat and the core Jewish value “Tikkun Olam,” or repairing the world, we are…

  • Learning about the 3 R’s- reduce, reuse, and recycle- by playing a Recycle Relay race where the students had to sort recyclables in the right bins and discover creative ways to reuse and/or reduce the need for those items.

  • Playing acting games to represent all of the important purposes that trees serve. 

  • Planting parsley for that we can eat at Passover to learn about the significance of planting trees and preparing for the future.

  • Connecting the customs of Tu B’Shevat and the value of Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world, by brainstorming ways to be more sustainable and and think more deeply about our impact on the world we live in.
