2nd Year B’nei Mitzvah

To learn about the overall history of the Holocaust and its implications for the current day, we are...

  • Looking at historical pictures from the World War II era, and discussing the historical context and events of the Holocaust. 

  • Discussing what community means in relation to the Holocaust.

  • Creating butterflies in remembrance of those who perished during the Holocaust. 

  • Working in groups to chronologically order events from World War II and Holocaust timeline in order to understand the how each one caused the next.

  • Discussing what it means to “not stand idly by,” and then creating dioramas about famous heroes who helped save Jewish lives during the Holocaust

  • Playing games that focus on leadership and discussing what being a leader means to us.

  • Identifying family tree of the patriarchs and matriarchs, and comparing it to our own family trees. 

  • Doing a craft with the Shabbat blessings for children, which connect us to the patriarchs and patriarchs by blessing us to be like them.

  • Writing letters to our great-great-grandchildren to help understand the idea of a legacy. 

  • Creating our own “Chesed (Kindness) Challenge”, which we will use to keep track of the acts of kindness we perform this week.

5th Grade: Passing Down Traditions

To learn about matriarchs, patriarchs, and L’Dor V’Dor, we are…

  • Played a group game to create a visual representation of L’Dor V’Dor, showing the power of passing down our ideas and traditions. 

  • Reviewing and reflected on the stories of our matriarchs and patriarchs from the Torah through stories and skits, and discussing the values that they passed down to us. 

  • Making our own invisible ink, and creating scrolls coded with teachings we want to pass down.

4th Grade: Generation to Generation

To learn about L’Dor V’Dor (from Generation to Generation), we are…

  • Playing groups games to find out about which people in our lives passed down knowledge, skills, and traditions to us. 

  • Discussing what a “generation” is, and discussing why passing on knowledge and customs is so important in preserving Judaism and Jewish culture. 

  • Creating L’Dor V’Dor time capsules, and discussing the question “If you could only hand down one single Jewish thing to the next generation, what would it be?” as a way to provoke deep thought on the importance of passing down Jewish tradition.

  • Discussing how showing gratitude is a mitzvah, different ways in which we can show it, and how it makes us feel when others show it to us.

  • Watching a video on the “Gratitude Experiment,” and putting it into practice by making a list of the things we are most thankful for in our lives.

  • Creating a class “Etz Hoda’ah,” a gratitude tree, with things we are grateful for written on each leaf.
